Kane County Doll Show; Opening of our Museum
Today, a life-long dream started to come true. We took possession of our doll museum
building, and began moving in cases. I
put post-it notes on them to remind me which dolls go where. All my dolls won’t fit; they really are a
doll universe, but a good representative grouping of each category will fit,
along with a small reference library, a few doll houses and miniatures, and a
nice selection of toys, antique to modern. Framed paper dolls will grace the
walls, and others will “live” organized in filing cabinets. One case will hold seasonal dolls and
artifacts, and other will be a small gift shop.
I had a lot of fun last week at the Kane County
show sponsored by Karla M. I sold three
copies of With Love from Tin Lizzie, a History of Metal dolls, out of just five that I brought, and I was
thrilled. There were many friends at this show, people I’ve known for years,
literally we grew up together. Many knew
my late parents, often referring to my patient Dad who brought Mom and Me as
“the man in the car.” I was there to
help my Friend Diane R. with her lovely booth, and I learned a lot, and am
learning a lot, in the process.
These folks are my family, and I felt from them love,
respect, and credibility, more than I got in over twenty years of teaching , [my
awesome students notwithstanding], more than I ever felt working in the courts,
or in private law firms. I loved the
law, loved the clients, but the culture was something else. In this group of like minded doll folk,
though, everything was different. A
lovely dealer named Peg donated a box of lovely 70s Barbie furniture to the
Museum. Pam G. and I spent the time
conversing about all kinds of dolls. My
friend Marion Z. and her sister Suzanne were there, and so were Marianne and
Jerry from Galena . Fritzi had a wonderful display, and Laverne
and George Koddy were there; I hadn’t seen them in years. I met some of my instagram and Facebook
friends as well. Quite simply, everyone was kind and
supportive.
There was no creepy doll garbage, and no doll divas. Thank you to all of you, my extended doll
family, for your support, and kind thoughts.
Without you, I wouldn’t have been able to move forward with this
project. Thank you, dear, sweet Dianne,
for finding room in your car for all our treasure, and to your friends Tammy,
Debbie, and their husbands for the fun and great conversation. Here’s to next
time!

The American Doll & Toy Museum will open the first week of December! Partially Transl. into Polish
After a lifetime of planning, it has finally happened! more details will follow as the doll drama unfolds, but The American Doll & Toy Museum will open the first week of December! This will be a smaller
version of our collection because of space limitations, but there will be
representative dolls from prehistory to the present, and a nice selection of
doll houses, miniatures, toys and related objects.
Many of you also follow our
main doll museum blog, Dr. E's Doll
Museum , and you know that
I am Dr. E and this is our unofficial name. I started a new Facebook Page
called American Doll
In and Toy Museum ,
and will follow up with a Twitter, Pinterest, and other social media accounts
to spread the word.
We'll have a small book shop
selling doll related objects, vintage paper airplanes, licensed merchandise
books, and perhaps some small antiques from the shop behind us. We also have a
GoFundMe Page for donations. https://www.gofundme.com/manage/ellen039s-campaign-for-american-doll-and-toy-museum
There will be special events
and give a ways. We'll celebrate each season and holiday, too. There will
be rotating displays of all kinds.
I plan on have a doll trinket
to give to each visitor as a memento.
Many of you have seen the
displays of my dolls at various museums. I've collected since age 3, and have
been planning this museum since grade school. We will join a small
neighbor hood near one of my alma maters called College Hill, which hosts other
events and houses several antique stores, a cafe, a hometown bar and grill, a
hometown barber shop, sports apparel shop and more. We will be contributing
to small business and to our community.
We welcome everyone; we aren't
just for doll collectors and dealers, and we hope by embracing the general
public, that we will also encourage young collectors.
Below are some of our citizens,
and there is a YouTube video with more.

The Doll Motif, English and German
Japanese doll expert and author Lea Baten writes about the
doll motif, where dolls appear as themes or doll related items that attract the
eye of the collector. Baten writes of
Netsuke, and Japanese woodcuts featuring dolls, but statues, figurines, various
types of figural art, all could be part of the doll motif. Victor Hugo addressed it in Les Miserables,
where Cosette makes a “baby” out of an old footstool. Treat it like a doll, and it will be a doll.
What doll related items to you include in your collections? Are you fans of lawn ornaments of angels and
Victorian children? Do you collect
antique photos for the fashions they portray?
Do you like collectible figurines or robots? Vintage children’s shoes and clothing? Perhaps you are into models, miniatures and
doll houses, with or without dolls? Or,
maybe you like art that portrays dolls and figures in still life paintings?
If you like any of these things, you have been caught up in
the doll motif. Share with us what items you like to collect along with your
dolls. It could be doll furniture, the
items mentioned above, old purses and accessories, vintage jewelry for your
dolls, old hankies to make doll dresses, use your imagination and share!

Christmas in July; Celebrating a custom in Australia!
Fans of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries will remember an episode set during Christmas in July. Many countries south of the Equator prefer celebrating Christmas at this time; it is colder and winter for them as it is hot and summer for us in July. There are also lots of marketing traditions that debut, e.g., The Hallmark Ornament Debut and Hobby Lobby Christmas decor debut are in July. Below is an encore post of some popular Christmas toys, and some pics of Christmas dolls. When little, I liked recreating Tasha Tudor's Dolls' Christmas; that was my tradition. Enjoy!
Christmas Picks:
As hard as it is to believe, Christmas and The Holidays are
nearly upon us. Windows shopping for
dolls and collectibles is one of my favorite things to do this time of year.
Below are some of the trends I’ve noticed and dolls and toys I find to be among
the best for this Holiday Season. I know
it gets here earlier and earlier; it is barely two weeks since Halloween, and
our local station is playing Christmas Music.
Everything is decorated, including many private residences. Here is my holiday potpourri of favorites,
just my opinion, mind you; I’m not a spokesperson for anyone, just a collector
with eclectic tastes.
Build a Bear: This
store is still active on the mall, with new stuffed figures and clothing for
The Peanuts Movie and Star Wars. Frozen
characters also are doing well. New to
me is LalaLoopsy as a “build a bear.”
The bear Darth Vader and Stormtrooper are adorable, at around 18 inches,
with very detailed outfits. They run
$35.00 each. Individual out fits are
$16.00. Outfits for the small,7 inch or
so animals run about $7.00, but many are now on sale for less. I like the outfits because they also work for
some kinds of dolls. Same goes for the
wigs and outfits. I think it would be
fun to have one animal with many outfits and accessories.
J.C. Penney’s:
I hadn’t been in Penney’s for around one year. I was dazzled by the new Christmas
sweaters, leggings, hats, and accessories.
Many of them light up and have real tinsel! But, I digress. Their ornaments and holiday décor are already
60% off, and their prices now begin at $1.80.
I saw very nice ballerina dolls, animals made of raffia and straw,
nutcrackers of all types, and angel. All
unusual and reasonable. Their collection
of Santa dolls is very nice, with 3 foot figures on sale for $72.00. These are very detailed and nicely done. Penney’s carries Hallmark cards and Disney
Princess Hallmark ornaments that are very detailed. The princesses now sell for $10.40 each. Not for sale, but interesting to look at are Penney’s
white, jointed manikins. They are large
half dolls, all white, jointed at the elbows and wrists, with jointed fingers.
Kohls:
Kohl’s always has a nice selection of stuffed characters for
$5.00 in support of various causes. They
have a decent toy selection, too, with lots of Barbie sets with outfits. Their ornaments are already 50% of, but they
are more pricey than other stores.
Still, little folk doll angels made of wine corks are on sale for
$3.50. These have wooden heads and
crocheted lace wings. There are also
cloth and felt dolls, including some very cute lumber jacks, straw animals,
licensed characters and blown glass figures.
Hallmark fans, take note; Kohl’s carries Hallmark Ornaments, too.
Deck the Walls:
These little kiosks open up in the center of the mall floor
all over the country. There are lots of
Jim Shore ornaments and statues, and some cute cloth Wizard of Oz ornament
dolls, about 6 inches long and jointed.
There are many theme and licensed characters for sale, and the deer with
antlers ornament would look great in a play scale doll house. I saw Victorian girls with red capes that
resembled Royal Doulton figurines for $8.00, and lots of mermaids and ocean
themed figures. Sometimes, Deck the
Walls will have super sales with last season’s ornaments selling for $1.00, and
ornaments on sale after Christmas. They
have been a tradition in my family for over 30 years.
Star Wars:
There is literally an explosion of Star Wars toys, dolls,
and plush. The latest I saw were Mylar
balloons for sale that were around 6 feet high or more representing Darth Vader
and other characters from the latest film.
I want one so badly I can’t stand it!
Look for these at local grocery stores and flower shops. I also see lots of ornaments and holiday
sweaters that are Star Wars themed.
Spencer’s Gifts:
I don’t think I want them on my tree, but doll and Christmas
ornament historians should take note.
Spencer’s is featuring naughty ornaments representing gingerbread people
and snow people. Enough said. But, if you are going to a grown-up party and
need a gag gift, well, use your best judgment!
This is just a partial listing of what I have observed. Amazon has a complete list of its favorite
toys, and American Girl, Madame Alexander, Florence and George and others have
wonderful doll related specials and products out. Also check out ads in “Doll
Castle News” and “Antique Doll Collector
Magazine” for more ideas for doll collecting gifts. Don’t forget upcoming Theriault’s auctions,
either, for those who are connoisseurs of antique dolls.

(Fairy Dolls, in Danish)
?
feer William Shakespeares A Midsummer Night's Dream. (MSD). Titania,
under svampe. Nej, Shakespeares feer ville have været life-sized, skræmmende
spille i hans bind Dream land.
Yet, despite their size, fairies in MSD
are the ancestors of our Tinkerbells, Victoria Plum, and Blue Fairies, so often
portrayed as dolls. Shakespeare is a master at making us sympathize with
supernatural characters by giving them human traits, so that we believe Theseus
and Hyppolita, King and Queen of Athens in MSD, are real
sovereigns, though they are mythical figures. The greatest line of any play
I’ve read is Theseus’ criticism of the hilarious spoof of Romeo and
Juliet he is about to watch, Pyramus and Thisbe, when he
says, “I don’t believe in these antique fables.” The irony is, of course, that
he is an antique fable.
Arthur Rackham (1867-1939)
was known for his illustrations for A Midsummer Night’s Dream,
Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Andersen’s Fairy Tales, and other fairy stories. His
ethereal pen and ink drawings washed in color created a style for doll makers
to emulate, even today. Arthur Lang (1844-1912) created the Green Fairy Book
and other multicolored books of fairy tales between 1889 and 1913. He was a
Scottish novelist, poet, and critic, who wrote and collected fairy tales and
fairy stories form all over the world. One of his sources was, perhaps, the
only available collection contemporary to him, Dinah Maria Mulock Craik's The Fairy Book
(1869).
Fairies have inspired doll
makers for some time. Fairy gardens and fairy houses, often with vintage items,
are hot collectibles right now, too. Antique and vintage dolls have clearly
influenced current fairy doll art, like the dolls featured from our friends at
The Toy Shoppe. The companies and dolls surveyed below are only a few examples
of fairy doll and collectibles available.
One charming
example of an antique fairy-inspired doll is the 1914 Our Fairy doll mold 222
by Hertel & Schwab. She is an all bisque Googly doll, and popular with
those who love tiny dolls. Another antique example is the Good Fairy by Raleigh
Doll Co 1916-1920.
Based on the
Disney Pinocchio character, Uneeda created a fairy doll. The Uneeda or U. 1960s
Blue Fairy doll uses their Suzette Tiny Teen doll, and is 21", circa 1961.
The Uneeda Magic Fairy Princess doll uses the Uneeda Debteen doll and wears a
white satin & tulle fairy costume with plastic wings.
Havencrest Castle |
Valentine Dolls were known for their elegant, jointed ballerina dolls that could point their toes. They created a couple of fairy dolls as well, including the Ballerina doll 18” Good Fairy, with pointed toes and a fairy tutu costume, fairy wings, and crown. Some collectors claim they have seen ballerinas like this that came with other outfits. Valentine produced a 19” doll for Sears.
Dollreference.com: Sugar Plum FE (1976), 9327 snefnug FE (1976), 9329 prinsesse
Aurora Fairy (1976) 9422 Peach satin kjole hvide Hæklet sjal, fersken åben tå
hæle (1976), ideel oprettet 1957 lyserøde fe, 18", og hvid fe, 15" i
vinyl.
TV-show for børn, der udvalgte eventyr. Lille vinyl eventyr dukker med wire
armatures var hot legetøj under midten af 60s. To eksempler var Hasbros
have gjort Arthur Rackham illustrationer kommer til livet.
for tand afventer The Tooth Fairy.
A Midsummer Night's Dream, han skal have det sidste ord her:
"Hvis vi skygger har fornærmet,
Tænk, men dette, og alle er bødet,
At du men har slumret her
Mens disse visioner vises.
Og dette svage og inaktiv tema,
Ikke mere giver men en drøm,
Gentles, ikke reprehend:
Hvis du undskyld, vil vi reparere:
Og som jeg er en ærlig Puck,
Hvis vi har ufortjent held
Nu at» scape slangens tunge,
Vi vil gøre afbigt ere lange;
Ellers kalder pucken en løgner;

Fairies, or, We’re all a bit Fey when it comes to Dolls!
Today is
Midsummer, or Midsommer. You may be
watching the Midsummer murders on PBS.
It is the day to honor all those who love fairy gardens, dolls, and
fairy dolls.
Perhaps the greatest introduction
to the world of fairies is William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer
Night’s Dream. (MSD). Titania, Oberon, and their Fairy court dominate the
mere mortals who mistakenly think they run the kingdom. Then there is Puck, the mischievous sprite
who has the last word, “If we shadows
have offended, think but his, and al is mended.”
Shakespeare’s contemporaries often
believed in the Faere, or Fey, but they were not tiny creatures with wings that
lived in abandoned teacups and under mushrooms.
No, Shakespeare’s Fairies would have been life-sized, scary fairies,
more like those portrayed in graphic artist Neal Gaiman’s retelling of the play
in his volume, Dream Country.
Yet, despite their size, fairies in MSD are the ancestors of our Tinkerbells, Victoria Plum, and Blue
Fairies, so often portrayed as dolls.
Shakespeare is a master at making us sympathize with supernatural
characters by giving them human traits, so that we believe Theseus and Hyppolita,

Some collectors claim they have seen ballerinas like this that came with other outfits. Valentine produced a 19” doll for Sears.
Certainly Barbie, most famous doll icon of all, has had her share of
fairy attire, including the following 70s outfits as identified by
Dollreference.com: Sugar Plum Fairy
(1976), 9327 Snowflake Fairy (1976),
9329 Princess Aurora Fairy (1976)
9422 Peach satin gown, white crochet shawl, peach open toe heels (1976) , Ideal
created the 1957 Pink Fairy, 18”, and the White Fairy, 15” in vinyl. Ideal, of course, created the Shirley Temple
Doll, and Temple
narrated a TV show for children that featured fairy tales. Small vinyl fairy
tale dolls with wire armatures were hot toys during the mid 60s. Two examples were Hasbro’s Storykins dolls
and Mattel’s Liddle Kiddle Storybook Dolls.
One was the fairy god-mother to Cinderiddle by Mattel.
The Toy Shoppe offers several fairy
dolls inspired by antiques. Sarah
Niemela’s Baby White Fairy African American Ornament is tiny, only 5 inches,
but she is made in the style of Victorian cotton bunting doll ornaments. Her expressive face reminds one of a good Leo
Moss doll, and her gossamer wings are like those of an Edwardian Christmas
fairy.
In the tradition of Lang’s multicolor fairy books, Lucia
Friedericy has produced the Lavender and Blue Fairy Mirror set. Friedericy dolls have all the quality and
attention detail of a fine antique, and these to fairies are no exception. With their lacy skirts and delicate wings,
they could also have made Arthur Rackham’s illustrations come to life. The Friedericy Fey are 15 inches high and are
sculpted of paper clay. They have hand
painted faces and mohair wings with hand painted bodices. They sit on a mirror sconce that can be hung
on a wall. With the mirrors, they are 19
inches tall and 6 inches wide and are a 2015 edition. Lucia and Judith
Friedericy are a mother-daughter doll artist dynamo whose dolls are collected
worldwide. Their Little Girl reading
with Fairies is a one-of-a-kind creation, and the girl’s look is as impish as
that one the pixie’s faces. The trio
read together, with the tiny fairies perched on either side of her open book.
Midsomer MiniMo by Charlie Bears is dressed in flower attire and is a nod
to Shakespeare. The bear is 6.5 inches
tall, and is the work of Isabelle Lee.
MiniMo has a body jointed in five places and flat paws that help her
stand well. She has glass eyes, a hand
embroidered nose and airbrush accents.
This little bear is part of the 2017 Charlie Bear MiniMo collection.
Tinkerbell by Xenis is 9 inches.
She is carved from Canadian maple wood with 13 joints. Her stand allows her pause “midflight!” Tinkerbell really makes Peter Pan come alive. Helen Kish also creates small fairies in the
form of doll shaped boxes, like the Pink Fairy Box. The doll comes off her base to reveal a
hiding place for a tooth awaiting The Tooth Fairy. Felix and Petunia are two
pixies that also are part of Kish ’s
series, which can also serve as cake toppers.
The fairy boxes are around 5 to 7 inches high and made of resin.
Finally, while there are many makers of fairy dolls, no column about them
would be complete without mentioning the felt sculpted Brownies and Cicely
Barker Fairies of R John Wright. The
artist has truly captured the essence of both these beloved illustrators. Every detail is complete, down to the
accurate portrayals of the flowers that the Cicely Barker Fairies represent.
Fairies have many relatives in folklore, including pixies, sprites,
brownies, goblins, and other supernatural creatures. Shakespeare’s Puck is one of the most famous,
mischievous and clever of the lot, and as he does in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, he should have the last word here:
“If we shadows have offended,
Think but this, and all is mended,
That you have but slumbered here
While these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
No more yielding but a dream,
Gentles, do not reprehend:
If you pardon, we will mend:
And, as I am an honest Puck,
If we have unearned luck
Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue,
We will make amends ere long;
Else the Puck a liar call;
So, good night unto you all.
Give me your hands, if we be
friends,
And Robin shall restore amends.”

In Chinese (Taiwan)
